Wording Wedding Invitations

It is costumary for the bride's family to take care of the wedding invitations ordering and mailing, therefore the inviations should come from the home of the bride.

Proper care should be taken when wording the wedding invitations, ideally the invitation would appear like this:

Mr. and Mrs. Peter O'Reilly
request the honor of your presence
at the marriage of their daughter
Maria O'Reilly
to
Mr. Mark Dole
on Wednesday, May the Eighth
at one o'clock in the afternoon
St Peter Chapel
Boston

If the father and mother of the bride are not together, the following are examples of how to use proper wording.

If the bride's mother has been remarried and she wishes to include the stepfather on the invitation, then it should appear like this:

Mr. and Mrs. John Turner Clinton
request the honour of your presence
at the marriage of her daughter
Peggy Johnson

If one parent is deceased and the surviving spouse wants to host the wedding alone.

Danielle Carter
daughter of Janet Carter and the late Nicholas Carter
and
Peter McCain
son of Mr. and Mrs. Steve McCain
request the honour of your presence
at their marriage

If the bride is a widow and wishes to re-marry, then the invitation should be issued in the name of her parents or her next of kin. The bride should continue to use the name of her deceased husband until she is remarried.

For example:

Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Harrington
Request the honour of your presence
at the marriage of their daughter
Mrs. Margaret Smith
to
Mr. John O'Hare
on Tuesday, May the eighth at five-thirty
St Peter Chapel

If the bride's parents are divorced but they are hosting the wedding together, and assuming that the mother has reverted back to her maiden name:

Mrs. Sue Anton
and
Mr. Michael Bush
request the pleasure of your company
at the wedding of their daughter
Sarah Joelle

If the couple chooses to host the wedding themselves, the wording on the invitation should be like this:

The honor of your presence
is requested at the marriage of
Miss Ann Silva
to
Mr. George Coelho

The titles of "Mr" and "Miss" may be omitted:

Ann Maria Silva
and
George Coelho
request the honour of your presence
at their marriage

If the wedding is being shared between two siblings then the older daughters name will be first:

Mr. and Mrs. Timothy Parker
request the honour of your presence
at the marriage of their daughters
Judy Beth
to
Mr. Paul Purdue
and
Raquel Marie
to
Mr. Samuel Smith
on Saturday, the twenty-third of March
