We know there are some areas that are just naturally prone to crime of all kinds, including that of auto theft. The higher the potential for auto theft, the higher the premium on your car insurance-the insurance company has to protect its interests, and the more claims it faces paying, the
more it is going to charge policyholders.
That leaves people living in high crime areas no alternative but to pay the higher rates even though it may never affect them for any number of reasons. Unless residents of each region come up with solutions to reduce the crime rate overall, the best they will be able to do is take precautions that will allow them to take advantages of discounts.
What is the solution in areas of high crime? New York has used stackable parking lots that make it impossible for a thief to drive out of the lot with your car. Of course, these are for space reasons-fitting 1000 cars into a parking lot is easier with less space when you do it this way.
Perhaps other big cities are doing the same thing, which is not a bad idea in order to reduce the amount of space needed for parking and to increase the number of cars in the car park. They could also be used to help with the cost of insurance, especially those who live in apartment hi-rises. Instead of standard parking garages or parking lots, if the apartments invested in this type of a set-up, it could save the tenants a great deal of money in car insurance. They don't all have to do, just those in high crime areas where car thefts are rampant.
Of course, the best deterrent to thieves is a good security system. Many cars today come equipped with a security system that prevents anyone from entering the vehicle without a key-if they attempt to do so, the alarm sounds. In addition, on some cars you cannot even enter from the passenger side, you must enter from the driver's side or the car will not disengage from "Park."
Although this factory-installed security system is somewhat of a deterrent, it is not as efficient as a sophisticated alarm system with a wailing tone loud enough to wake up the neighbors. A sophisticated alarm system can be set to be ultra-sensitive, but you want to be careful, because if the alarm is too sensitive, cars driving by on the street with set it off.
If you live in a high crime area, you want to avoid any vehicles that are on the "hot" list if you're seeking to save money. No how sophisticated the alarm system, if your car is among the cars most frequently stolen, you will still pay more than you would for a less desired car.
If you want to have that highly-desired model, wait until you move to an area where you can put it in a locked garage or stacked parking lot where it is out of the reach of neighborhood car thieves.
